St. Marcellinus Catholic Church was founded in 1957 in the Rosewood-Bandini areas East Los Angeles which was later incorporated into the City of Commerce. The first sacraments were humbly celebrated at the Kelly's restaurant at the corner of Washington Blvd and Atlantic Blvd until the land was acquired and the church, the first two classrooms and the old bathrooms were constructed at the present site by Fr. Thomas Hayes, founding pastor. Msgr. Peter Bullum took the helm as the second pastor in 1971. Msgr. Peter E. Garcia became pastor of St. Marcellinus for a few months in 1984 but was replaced at the beginning of 1985 by Fr. Jules Mayer who served for over 22 years.
Dr. Humberto Ramos, PhD was appointed Parish Life Director to pastor the parish on August 15, 2007 without a resident priest. Under his leadership and with the help of a team of priests (Fr. Luis Valbuena, OMI, Msgr. Henry Gomez, Fr. Ed Soto and others), deacons (Bill Landa and Armando Garcia), and committed leaders the parish began an evangelization renewal that ministers in English and Spanish. The parish evangelizes by providing several retreat experiences, promoting Ecclesial Base Communities (Comunidades de Base) and formational experiences.
St. Marcellinus was gifted on Easter Sunday 2013 with the assignment Fr. Gilbert Cruz as Sacramental Minister in residence at St. Marcellinus. Deacon Jose de Jesus Benavides was ordained a deacon in June 2015 for the parish.
Today, St. Marcellinus is a thriving parish community that strive to bring the love of Christ to our small corner of Los Angels.
